  5. Hi Stewart - you asked for a bit of a critique...

    I think the top one is much more appealing - there's more interest to hold the attention.

    The lead-in to the tree provided by the canal is unbroken (with the other one there is a big blob of dark breaking it up) and it has an interesting wiggle, pulling the eye further in.

    We can see bull-rushes and other silhouetted bank vegetation, drawing our eye through the scene, and a reflection of a tree that balances the silhouetted one on the horizon.

    Finally, the top one benefits more from rule-of-thirds aspects and overall is more balanced as a result.

    If you really want to continue your improvement, I think you're ready for somewhere like thestudio-online.co.uk where you will get the constructive critique and encouragement that will take you to the next level.

    That's the place that helped me up (thanks Barrie, John, Silversnapper et al).
